In 2003, Operation Christmas Child (OCC) were hoping to meet their target of sending 1,200,000 shoeboxes to children of any and every denomination and any religion – no child is barred from receiving a gift.  The pictures opposite and below were taken at the Wrexham warehouse of Operation Christmas Child (OCC) when Wellspring Church visited on 6th December.

As one of the representatives of Wellspring said, “It is wonderful to see the love and generosity of those that give a shoebox.  Many include photographs, Christmas cards, and letters.  We make sure that all shoeboxes have chocolate included in them.  Many children who receive a shoebox never have chocolate from one Christmas to another.  When we see just how much children in the UK receive at Christmas, it really puts into perspective how little the children in many other countries receive.”

Operation Christmas Child

This is a brilliant yet simple opportunity for children and families to send gifts to youngsters who would otherwise never receive anything at Christmas. From very simple beginnings, the project has become the largest children’s shoe box appeal in the world.

Operation Christmas Child sends a message of hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and offering booklets of Bible stories. It focuses on the true meaning of Christmas – Jesus Christ, God’s greatest gift.

In 2002 more than 6 million gift-filled shoe boxes were sent to some of the poorest boys and girls in the world in over 100 countries.

By taking an average size shoe box, covering it with Christmas wrapping paper and filling it with paper, pencils, toothbrush, toothpaste, toys and sweets children in the UK can demonstrate that they are thinking of those less fortunate than themselves.

Samaritan’s Purse International has developed an infrastructure in the UK to collect, sort and ship the boxes to Eastern Europe. Working with long established in-country partners, we can ensure that each box is delivered to a needy child.

Where it is appropriate a booklet containing Bible stories and the gospel message, similar to the ones which children receive in UK Sunday schools, will be offered to children receiving gift-filled shoe boxes.
